About the Uozu Buried Forest
The Uozu Buried Forest Museum in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, preserves an ancient forest of Japanese cedar trees (sugi) that were buried by natural causes more than 2,000 years ago. These tree roots, still in their original location, offer a rare glimpse into prehistoric ecology. Recognized as a Special Natural Monument, this site is one of Japan's most important geological and botanical treasures.
Main Features
- Submerged cedar roots displayed in an underground, water-filled hall
- Interactive exhibits explaining coastal changes and Jomon-era forests
- Real-scale observation of the buried forest at its original discovery site
The Mystical Mirages of Toyama Bay
Uozu is also famous for the mirage phenomenon known as "Shinkiro" (蜃気楼), which occurs primarily from March to June over Toyama Bay. These mirages appear as floating cities or stretched landscapes across the sea horizon. The museum's nearby observation deck offers one of the best viewing spots in Japan. The combination of clear weather, water temperature, and air layers makes this a scientifically and visually stunning spectacle.
